WIBRAIN: TOWARD THE ACTUALIZATION OF THE PERFECT GADGET

From Media Slog

Last week when I was at Trends Mobile at Funan Digitalife Mall in Singapore, I saw a gadget that was teetering on the brink of electronic perfection- the WiBrain B1LH.

The Wibrain is a fully functioning ultra-portable computer, slightly smaller than a PSP, that runs the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It has a full keyboard, touchpad and a 1024x600 resolution screen. Any program that runs on Linux will run on this thing. It also has a 802.11 card in it, a microphone, a camera, and speakers.

Unfortunately, despite the incredible portable power of the WiBrain, its shortcomings prevented me from getting it. First, it only had one USB port. Most portable hard drives require two USB ports to work effectively. It also has no external port for an SD card so expansion of this device is out of the question. Moreover, the camera driver doesn't function properly with Linux. Finally, the space bar is awkwardly positioned and small; this makes typing on the thing slightly annoying.

The network support for this thing is also disappointing. If I could stick a 3G card in it and access the internet anywhere and make cell phone calls with it, this thing would probably be my new right hand. Unfortunately, it is just big enough and clunky enough that if I did get it, it would probably just sit on my desk collecting dust most of the time. Or it would be relegated to be an overpriced only-on-the-airplane gaming device. The little computer is unbelievably impressive, but the final verdict on this particular model is close, but no cigar.

But...one day they'll make a model, fix the spacebar, tweak the form factor, and add some expansion slots and I'll probably be the first in line to get it. I can't wait!
