in my recent trip to indonesia, i had the chance to try many kinds of kopi luwak (civet coffee). some are horrible, some are just like regular coffee and i was lucky enough to have 2 good civet coffee. i mean, really really good.

i was talking to the barista which happened to be the owner of the coffee shop. well, she told me that a genuine coffee luwak should not be roasted with any margarine or any other additional flavoring because originally, coffee berries had fruit, chocolate and caramel extract. so it is actually very much depend on the quality of the poop, roasting method and grinding method.

well well, anyway, i couldnt be bothered with the process. i paid like US$15 for a small cup of luwak, served in cowboy style (nothing fancy like syphon, vietnam style or even french press). boy..it smells fruity and caramel like beside the coffee smell. it's smooth and the aftertaste is not overpowering and doesnt stuck on your tongue. it tastes sour, just like the way i like good arabica coffee.

a very unique thing about it is, it smells good and taste even better when it's room temperature (or even cold). normally, regular coffee will taste like a bitter water with coffee smell, but this kopi luwak remain good even after it's no longer hot/warm.

i finished my luwak by adding a little sugar in it. the sourness was gone, and the fruity smell was even better.

i guess i didnt waste my money, haha.

The Vietnamese coffee was very strong. I remember meeting a Kiwi who obnoxiously talked about how great the coffee was during every other minute. "Kopi Dien," I think he called it.

Byron also thought that his Vietnamese coffee wasn't quite as thick as the authentic stuff, but he didn't exactly know what they did to make it that way.

Agree - wasn't as amazing/unique a taste - maybe i was expecting more. Have you noticed though, Vietnamese coffee tends to have a stronger, more natural hazelnut flavour than the brews promoted in coffee chains?
